Bryan Air News

Hey pal

This week on the Bryan Air Podcast, we spoke about a subject that's been a hot topic in local aviation circles—the state of African aviation. There's so much to be proud of, but also plenty of room for growth, especially when it comes to working together.

Did you know that Africa has over 300 airlines spread across the continent? Thats a LOT of airlines with some of them having a maximum fleet size of 1 aircraft. This level of fragmentation is not sustainable. With all these airlines we are still only serving 20% of the African market, which means foreign carriers are stepping in to fill the gaps.

At the recent Aviation Africa Summit, Henok Teffera Shawl, the MD of Boeing Africa, shared some interesting insights. He pointed out that Europe, 20 years ago, had over 11 global airlines due to protectionist policies. Today, they've consolidated down to four major airlines, with the rest acting as feeders. His message was clear: if we don't start collaborating and finding a balance, we might see foreign airlines dominating our skies even more.

Our current load factor—the percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers—is only around 60%. Here in South Africa, we're already seeing positive changes. South African aviation appears to be strong with a high level of competition amongst the top brands.

What’s Coming Up

I’m heading to Paris next week! I am looking forward to catching up with some old colleagues. And let’s be honest, I’m also looking forward to indulging in some good French vino.

Ryan is away in the Kruger with his family for a much deserved break. I am planning on releasing a short aviation news highlight video early in the week but it wont be the world famous Bryan and Ryan duo that you are used too.
