Aviation Motivation - Protect Our Pilots

Hey Pal

I had to venture to the other side of the airport yesterday, I ended up taking a drive to where my old man used to have his Executive Aerospace hangar. It brought back some nice memories. I was last there nearly 20 years ago which is insane. If I am being honest the aircraft parked on the apron area outside his hangar in those days were a hell of a lot more interesting than the aircraft I saw yesterday. It is always cool to be around aircraft and be close enough to smell the Jet A1 from time to time.

AVIATION MOTIVATION

Have you heard of an LRD system? The Mentor pilot posted a rather alarming video on YouTube about 2 particular incidents from 2023 that occurred on 737 Max aircraft. Both incidents resulted in a Mayday call due to smoke entering the flight deck after a bird strike causing severe damage to the engines. This however was not ordinary smoke, it was created by the expulsion of oil from the engine sump into the bleed air system and subsequent delivery to the air conditioning packs and then into the aircraft. The oil was drained from the sump due to the activation of the LRD system which activates if the engine encounters a severe vibration. On both these occasions the system was activated as it should have after the bird strike but due to the design of the Max and its bleed air system the contaminated and TOXIC smoke was delivered to both the flight deck and the cabin.

A further toxicology report later stated that it would take just 39 seconds in the small confines of the flight deck for the dosage of toxic fumes to become LETHAL. On both occasions the crew were quick enough to don the oxygen masks, shut down the engine and return to their departure aerodromes safely. We can only hope that there are no long term effects on the pilots due to the toxic fume inhalation.  If you have not seen the video, I suggest you check it out on the Mentor Pilot channel.

THE SUPERSONIC BOOM WITHOUT THE BANG

Could this be the future of air travel? I don’t think it will replace any jet liner we have today but it could it serve as a replacement for the mighty Concorde? The aircraft design is impressive, it has powerful enough engines to push through the sound barrier at over 30 000 feet thereby being too high for the boom to be heard by anyone on the ground. I have been following the Boom Supersonic website closely, these guys know what that are doing and I have no doubt that a full size concept will be in the sky in the very near future. They have been conducting test flights on a small scale model up till now. I reckon the boomless jet is just what this sometimes “old fashioned” industry needs.

BRYAN AIR

I do a weekly podcast with my best mate Ryan, where I pretend to understand what is happening in the airline industry. You can subscribe on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube.

THINGS I’M WORKING ON

  • This newsletter: It is an important part of my week. I am hell bent on trying to add value and not be a nuisance. We all get so much junk in our inbox. Just so that you know my intention is to create a little snippet of value, keep it, toss it, share it. I hope you like it.

  • The Bryan Air Podcast format: The podcast is like my third child. I give my all to the pod every week. Sometimes people watch it and sometimes they don’t. I wish I knew the secret sauce but I don’t. I am just going to persevere and make those 1% improvements.

  • Work Projects: I have 2 major projects going on at Simaero that are keeping me on my toes and also a little tired to be honest.

  • School drop off and pick up - I did not manage to drop off or fetch my little girl once this week which is not good enough. I am going to do better next week.

  • Jiu Jitsu - I missed both classes this week. I will report back on some improvements next week.

Writing this down has made me realize why last week was not one that will go in my memory bank. I took a few steps backwards but that’s OK. Coming in hot next week.

BIG LOVE

Bryan
